scanners and code readers

I'm still looking to purchase a scanner but can anyone tell me if ford or chrysler or any of the imports are set up the same as the older gm's where you can use a paper clip to groung out the aldl connector and get the light to flash?

Gm, Ford yes obd-1 a paperclip can be used. But imports not sure. Dodge you can cycle the key off and on to get a code.
But on a obd-2. Obd-2 requires a code reader.
